Civil Designer

Residential Development | Civil Engineering & Infrastructure

The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Civil Designer to join an established residential property developer with a growing portfolio of housing developments across the North West and North Wales.

The business is committed to delivering high-quality residential developments and recognises the importance of effective technical design in ensuring projects progress efficiently from initial site appraisal and planning through to construction and completion.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technically minded Civil Designer to contribute to a varied portfolio of residential schemes, working closely with civil engineers, technical managers, external consultants and wider development teams.

The successful candidate will play an important role in developing practical, cost-effective civil engineering solutions that support planning approvals, infrastructure delivery and the successful development of new housing sites.

The Role

As Civil Designer, you will support the technical design and development of residential sites, producing civil engineering drawings, layouts and supporting documentation for a range of infrastructure and drainage requirements.

Working alongside the wider technical team and external consultants, you will contribute to the development of design solutions from initial feasibility and planning stages through to detailed design and construction.

You will help ensure that designs are technically robust, coordinated with other disciplines and suitable for implementation on site, while meeting relevant standards, regulatory requirements and project specifications.

This role would suit someone with a background in civil engineering design who is looking to develop their experience within residential land development and housing infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare civil engineering drawings, layouts and technical design information for residential developments.

  • Assist with the design of site infrastructure, including roads, highways, drainage, earthworks, levels and associated external works.

  • Develop surface water and foul drainage layouts in accordance with project requirements and relevant design standards.

  • Produce site levels, road layouts, longitudinal sections, cross-sections and detailed engineering drawings.

  • Support the preparation of technical documentation for planning applications, engineering approvals and construction packages.

  • Interpret topographical surveys, site investigations, engineering reports and other technical information.

  • Coordinate civil designs with structural engineers, architects, planning consultants, utility providers and other external stakeholders.

  • Assist with the preparation and submission of technical information to local authorities, statutory undertakers and other approving bodies.

  • Review design information and identify potential technical constraints, clashes and opportunities for improvement.

  • Ensure drawings and design documentation are accurate, coordinated and maintained throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Support the technical appraisal of prospective development sites by identifying infrastructure requirements and potential engineering constraints.

  • Liaise with site teams and contractors to help resolve design queries and support the implementation of approved designs.

  • Contribute to value engineering exercises, identifying practical solutions that improve buildability and cost efficiency.

  • Maintain organised project records and ensure design information is issued in line with programme requirements.

About You

You will be an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Civil Designer with experience producing civil engineering designs, ideally within residential development, land development or a civil engineering consultancy.

You will have a good understanding of the technical requirements involved in preparing sites for residential construction and be comfortable working with design software, engineering drawings and technical documentation.

You will also be a collaborative team player who can work effectively with engineers, technical managers and external consultants to help deliver coordinated and practical design solutions.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • Experience in a Civil Designer, Civil Engineering Technician or similar technical design role.

  • Experience producing civil engineering drawings and layouts for construction or development projects.

  • An understanding of residential site infrastructure, including highways, drainage, levels and earthworks.

  • Familiarity with surface water and foul drainage design.

  • Experience using AutoCAD and, ideally, Civil 3D or other relevant civil engineering design software.

  • The ability to interpret topographical surveys, engineering drawings and technical reports.

  • An understanding of relevant UK design standards, planning requirements and technical approval processes.

  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to producing accurate design information.

  • Good communication and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.

  • The ability to work independently when required while contributing effectively within a wider technical team.

A relevant HNC, HND or degree in Civil Engineering, or an equivalent technical qualification, would be advantageous.

Experience working for a residential developer, housebuilder or civil engineering consultancy on housing developments would be particularly beneficial.
