Chartered Structural Engineer

Structural Engineering Consultancy | Insurance & Building Defect Claims

The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Chartered Structural Engineer to join an established structural engineering consultancy specialising in structural investigations, building defects, engineering design and insurance-related work.

Working across residential, commercial and industrial properties, the business provides technical expertise to clients dealing with structural damage, building defects and complex repair requirements.

This role would suit an experienced Chartered Structural Engineer with a strong background in insured building work, who enjoys investigating structural problems, identifying the causes of damage and developing practical, cost-effective solutions for reinstatement and repair.

You will play an important role in delivering high-quality engineering advice, producing clear technical reports and working closely with insurers, loss adjusters, surveyors, contractors and property owners.

The Role

As Chartered Structural Engineer, you will undertake structural inspections, investigations and assessments of buildings affected by damage, movement or structural defects.

You will be responsible for determining the cause and extent of structural issues, providing professional engineering recommendations and advising on the most appropriate methods of repair.

Working across a varied portfolio of insurance-related projects, you will manage commissions from initial instruction and site investigation through to reporting, repair recommendations and, where required, monitoring remedial works through to completion.

This is an opportunity to combine strong technical engineering knowledge with practical problem-solving and client-facing responsibilities within a specialist consultancy environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out structural inspections and investigations of buildings affected by insured events, including fire, flood, subsidence, impact damage and other forms of structural movement or deterioration.

  • Diagnose the cause, extent and implications of structural damage and building defects.

  • Prepare detailed structural reports outlining findings, technical assessments and recommended remedial solutions.

  • Develop practical and cost-effective repair and reinstatement strategies.

  • Prepare schedules of work, repair specifications and technical documentation to support insurance claims.

  • Provide professional engineering advice to insurers, loss adjusters, building surveyors, contractors and property owners.

  • Review structural movement, cracking, foundation issues, ground conditions and other defects affecting existing buildings.

  • Undertake structural calculations and design work where required to support repair and strengthening proposals.

  • Liaise with contractors and other professionals to ensure proposed remedial works are technically appropriate and deliverable.

  • Attend site meetings, review repair progress and undertake inspections during remedial works where required.

  • Support tendering, technical queries and post-tender contract administration as appropriate.

  • Manage project workloads, prioritise instructions and deliver reports within agreed timescales.

  • Maintain accurate records, ensure technical quality and uphold professional standards across all commissions.

About You

You will be a technically strong Chartered Structural Engineer with experience in the assessment and investigation of existing buildings, ideally with a significant proportion of your work involving insurance claims and insured reinstatement projects.

You will be confident conducting site inspections, interpreting structural defects, identifying the underlying causes of damage and communicating your findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

You will also understand the importance of providing objective, evidence-based engineering advice that helps stakeholders make informed decisions about repairs, reinstatement and risk.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Chartered status with the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) or an appropriate recognised professional institution.

  • Proven experience working as a Structural Engineer within a consultancy environment.

  • Direct experience handling insured building work, structural damage investigations or insurance-related engineering commissions.

  • Experience working with insurers, loss adjusters, building surveyors and other professionals involved in the insurance claims process.

  • Strong knowledge of structural defects, building movement, subsidence and damage caused by fire, flooding or impact.

  • Experience preparing structural investigation reports, repair specifications and remedial recommendations.

  • A sound understanding of structural behaviour, building construction and the assessment of existing buildings.

  • Strong analytical, investigative and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical findings clearly.

  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple instructions and competing deadlines.

  • A practical, commercially aware approach to developing appropriate repair solutions.

Experience in structural calculations, remedial design, contract administration and the inspection of completed repair works would also be beneficial.

What's on Offer?

  • The opportunity to work within a specialist structural engineering consultancy.

  • A varied workload involving technically interesting investigations and insurance-related projects.

  • The opportunity to develop relationships with insurers, loss adjusters and other established industry professionals.

  • Involvement in projects from initial investigation and diagnosis through to repair design and reinstatement.

  • A collaborative working environment where technical expertise and practical problem-solving are valued.

  • Opportunities to contribute to the continued development of the consultancy's insurance and structural investigation services.

  • A competitive salary and benefits package, dependent on experience.
